About Hanna de la Croix

Hanna de la Croix has been a consultant surgeon since 2020, with a clinical focus on the surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

Research areas - research is primarily focused on the surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), with particular emphasis on reconstructive surgery following colectomy. Her research includes long-term outcomes after ileal pouch-anal anastomosis, ileorectal anastomosis and Kock pouch, as well as patient-reported outcomes related to bowel, urinary and sexual function and quality of life. She also conducts epidemiological studies on centralisation and equitable access to reconstructive surgery, as well as research at the intersection of IBD and colorectal cancer.

A second research area is hernia surgery. Hanna de la Croix served as registry holder of the Swedish Hernia Register from 2018 to 2023 and remains a member of its steering committee. Together with several members of the steering committee, she is conducting a registry-based randomised controlled trial within the Swedish Hernia Register.

Research environment - Hanna de la Croix is part of the IBD-SURG research group (Inflammatory Bowel Disease – Surgical Outcomes Research Group) at the colorectal unit, Sahlgrenska University Hospital/Östra. The group conducts clinical and translational research on the surgical treatment of IBD and is closely linked to the national highly specialised care programme for reconstructive IBD surgery. Within IBD-GO, a prospective biobank and clinical database are being established to enable studies of biological mechanisms and long-term outcomes following IBD surgery.

Through her previous role as registry holder of the Swedish Hernia Register, Hanna de la Croix has also established a broad national and international research network in hernia surgery, which remains an important part of her research environment.
