Collaborations for Sustainable Oceans

Environment for Development (EfD) is a global network of environmental economics research centres solving the world’s most pressing environmental and development challenges in the Global South. One of the six programmes concerns sustainable managing of coast and seas. The network is coordinated by the University of Gothenburg.

EuroMarine is a European marine science network launched in 2014. It represents the merger of the scientific communities of three former European Networks of Excellence: EUR-OCEANS, Marine Genomics Europe, and MarBEF.

A European research infrastructure that provides researchers and companies with access to marine organisms and the facilities to study them, including experimental facilities and technological platforms. The University of Gothenburg leads the national part of the network EMBRC Sweden.

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, ICES, wants to advance and share scientific understanding of marine ecosystems and the services they provide and to use this knowledge to generate state-of-the-art advice for meeting conservation, management, and sustainability goals. Several of the University's researchers participate in ICES' s working groups.

The objective of IPBES is to strengthen the science-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, long-term human well-being and sustainable development.  IPBES was established under the auspices of UN in 2012, and the UN bodies UN Environment, UNDP, UNESCO and FAO.

The European Ocean Coalition (EU4Ocean) connects diverse organisations, projects and people that contribute to ocean literacy and the sustainable management of the ocean. Supported by the European Commission, this bottom-up inclusive initiative aims at uniting the voices of Europeans to make the ocean a concern of everyone.

The Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment (Havsmiljöinstitutet) is a national academic node for interdisciplinary analysis and synthesis assisting marine environmental governance. A cooperation between University of Gothenburg, Stockholm University, Umeå University, Linnaeus University and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

The Swedish Mariculture Research Center, SWEMARC, is one of six interdisciplinary research centers at the University of Gothenburg with research that meets today's global societal challenges. The goal is to increase the sustainability of farming food from the ocean through interdisciplinary and socially engaging research.
