Emotions in organizations
Summary
This course offers a broad perspective on the role of emotions in social life, addressing a variety of sociological theories of emotions – including interactive, collective, and structural aspects of emotions. The course also introduces methods and methodology in the study of emotions.
About
The sociology of emotions takes the dyadic relationship as the smallest unit of analysis and thus offers a distinct relational and interactional perspective on emotions.
Students on this course learn how emotions both originate in and constitute social, organizational, and institutional life, including how emotions play a key role in social inequality.
The entwinement between emotion, cognition and rational action is a core take-away, useful for understanding how emotions shape and inform, for instance, social integration, conflict and solidarity, education, class/social group cohesion, economic, financial and political decisions, political action including social movements, and institutional/organizational emotional regimes.
Who should apply?
The course is aimed at advanced level students in social science who want to learn more about the role of emotions in society.
Prerequisites and selection
Entry requirements
To be eligible to follow the course 15 credits in Sociology at the advanced level is required or equivalent. Applicants must prove their knowledge of English: English level 2/English 6/English B from Swedish Upper Secondary School or the equivalent level of an internationally recognized test, for example TOEFL, IELTS.
Selection
Selection is based upon the number of credits from previous university studies, maximum 165 credits.
After graduation
This course can be used to complete a Master’s degree in Sociology. After graduation, you can work on social issues within government agencies, non-profit organisations, companies or local authorities. Examples of job titles include researcher, case officer, coordinator and project manager. A Master’s degree also qualifies you to apply for doctoral studies.
Facilities
Teaching takes place in the premises of the Faculty of Social Sciences in the Haga district in central Gothenburg. Lectures and seminars within "Campus Haga" are held in the buildings Dragonen and Sappören (Sprängkullsgatan) as well as Husaren (Husargatan).

Exchange opportunities
Students taking stand-alone courses have excellent opportunities to take part in exchange programmes. The only requirement is that the courses you take abroad must be eligible for credit towards a future degree at the University of Gothenburg.
