The Institute of Medicine is the largest department at the University of Gothenburg, with around 460 employees and nearly 300 doctoral students. Want to know more about us? Here are some short facts and figures about us.
We educate the next generation of physicians and other healthcare professionals. Our programmes are characterised by a strong integration of research and education, modern teaching methods, and a student-centred approach to learning. In addition to undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral education, we also offer commissioned professional development courses that provide advanced expertise in areas such as cardiovascular care, internal medicine, and research and development methodology.
Our research spans a broad spectrum—from molecules and cells to individuals and society. We conduct research in several major public health challenges, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, and rheumatic diseases. Other key areas include asthma, public health, and community medicine.
Researchers at the Institute of Medicine work within a strong, internationally competitive research environment encompassing translational, clinical, and social medicine. Healthcare providers are our most important partners, and we actively strive to ensure that our research findings are translated into clinical practice and benefit society as a whole.
