The Phantasm of Modernism: China and Japan in Literature, Film, Art and Critical Theory
About
In this course, the portrayal and ideas of China and Japan in the visual arts of the 20th century and the early 21st century, film and literature are analysed.
From a mainly psychoanalytical perspective, the course demonstrates that these oriental "phantasms" not only form an important and consistent theme in the artistic practices and aesthetic theories of high and postmodernism; in some cases, these phantasm constitute their first building blocks.
