About Ulrika Lagerlöf Nilsson

I am an Associate Professor (Docent) of History at the University of Gothenburg and an Associate Professor (Docent) of Church History at Åbo Akademi University, Finland. I hold a PhD in History (2010) and a Doctor of Theology degree in Church History (2017), and work as a Senior Lecturer in History at the Department of Historical Studies.

My research focuses primarily on nineteenth- and twentieth-century history and church history. My main research interests include the history of institutions and professions, the history of education, and the history of medicine, with particular attention to power, gender, and social networks. My research has explored power and recruitment within the Church of Sweden, religious ideals and literary fiction in Low Church and Free Church movements, as well as the professionalisation and working conditions of healthcare professions.

Another central area of my research concerns ageing and old age from a historical perspective. This includes historical perceptions of age, the living conditions of older people, and the development of care for older people, both in Sweden and in Swedish-American contexts. Biographical approaches and the use of literary fiction as a historical source are recurring elements of my research.

I am also a certified upper secondary school teacher in History and Religious Education and serve as Programme Coordinator for History within the Subject Teacher Education Programme at the Department of Historical Studies. My teaching focuses primarily on history and history didactics within subject teacher education.
