What matters to mum? – Women’s perspectives on pharmacological treatment for pre-eclampsia

Research project

Short description

What matters to mum? explores what women in Sweden and South Africa consider important in the development of medicines to prevent and treat pre-eclampsia. The project investigates which potential treatment outcomes women value most and what would motivate them to participate in clinical drug trials. The aim is to ensure that women’s perspectives have a greater influence on future research on pre-eclampsia.

Background

Pre-eclampsia can pose serious risks to both the woman and the baby. Better medicines are therefore needed to prevent the condition and to treat it when it develops early in pregnancy.

When new treatments are developed, it is important that research takes account of what the women affected consider important. This includes both which treatment outcomes matter most and which risks women are willing to accept in order to prevent or treat pre-eclampsia.

Aim

What matters to mum? explores women’s perspectives on future pharmacological treatments and clinical drug trials for pre-eclampsia. The project focuses on which treatment outcomes women value most and which factors would motivate them to try a pharmacological treatment.

Methods and significance

The study is being conducted in Sweden and South Africa and includes women who have experienced pre-eclampsia or are at increased risk of developing the condition. The women are asked to consider different potential benefits and risks of pharmacological treatment and describe what matters most to them.

By conducting the study in two different healthcare and societal contexts, the project can also contribute to a better understanding of similarities and differences in women’s priorities. The findings can be used to shape future clinical drug trials and research questions based on what matters to the women affected.
