This research project explores how young adults and parents in Sweden experience, understand, and navigate economic violence. By generating new knowledge about a frequently overlooked form of violence, the project aims to deepen understanding and provide evidence that can strengthen research, policy, and support services.
About the research
Economic Violence and Young Adults (2026–2029) examines how parents and young adults in Sweden experience, understand, and respond to economic violence. The project aims to generate new knowledge about a form of violence that is often overlooked, yet can have significant consequences for autonomy, safety, family relationships, and young adults’ transition to independent life. The study explores how economic control, exploitation, dependency, and financial restrictions are framed and managed in everyday life, both by young adults and by parents. By analysing these experiences, the project will contribute to the development of theory on economic violence, intergenerational relations, and vulnerability in young adulthood.
