Description

How can we live together? This is one of the most fundamental questions we face as human beings. In democratic societies with well-functioning political institutions, conflicts between different groups can be managed through free elections, well-designed legislation, and an effective public administration governed by the rule of law. Where such institutions are lacking, political divisions may instead lead to violence and instability, or to one group seizing power at the expense of all others.

Political science addresses precisely these questions. As the study of politics, power, and society, it examines why political conflicts arise, how they manifest themselves, and how they are managed. Political scientists study how political decisions are made and implemented, how power is distributed and exercised, and the relationship between the state and its citizens. They also examine political ideas and ideologies, and how democracy and other forms of government work in practice.

At the University of Gothenburg, political science encompasses the following areas: political institutions and parties, political behaviour, public administration, international politics, comparative politics, and political theory.
