Every year, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, welcomes around 100 exchange students from partner universities around the world. During your exchange period, you can take courses, participate in clinical placements, carry out thesis work, or gain experience in research environments.
Whether you are interested in healthcare, medicine, odontology, public health, or biomedical sciences, we offer a dynamic international study environment in one of Scandinavia’s leading health science faculties.
Who can apply?
To be eligible as an exchange student, your home university must have a formal exchange agreement with Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.
Depending on your field of study, you may be able to:
- Take courses within health and medical sciences
- Participate in clinical placements
- Complete a thesis project
- Join research-related activities
- Undertake internships or applied studies

Courses and individual study arrangements
Our course catalogue offers a range of options for incoming exchange students. If you cannot find a suitable course, there may be opportunities to arrange an individual study plan in consultation with our International Coordinators.
Examples of individual arrangements include:
- Clinical placements or rotations
- Internships
- Applied studies
- Data collection projects
- Laboratory work
Study in Swedish
Students with sufficient Swedish language skills may also apply for courses offered within our regular Swedish-taught study programmes. We recommend contacting the International Coordinator responsible for your subject area to discuss available options.
Preparing for your exchange
Many exchange students take part in clinical training during their stay. If you have been accepted to a clinical placement, you will need to review important information regarding health requirements and prepare documentation of required vaccinations before your arrival.
Make sure to review all practical information well in advance to ensure a smooth start to your exchange studies.
