Archaeological theory and method in academic writing
Summary
The course deepens your understanding of academic writing in archaeology, with particular emphasis on theory and method. You will work on formulating and defining research questions, making and justifying theoretical and methodological choices, and situating archaeological problems within a broader research context. At the same time, you will develop your ability to analyse, construct arguments and critically evaluate academic positions.
About
How do you develop an archaeological research question into a well-founded academic text? In this course, you will deepen your understanding of the principles of academic writing and the requirements of academic texts in archaeology. You will explore the different stages of the writing process and learn how research problems are formulated, defined and situated within a broader research context.
Particular emphasis is placed on theory and method and on the relationship between theoretical perspectives, methodological choices and academic writing. You will work independently to formulate archaeological research questions and analyse complex problems, while developing your ability to justify and critically evaluate different academic choices.
During the course, you will develop your academic writing skills and your ability to make well-founded judgements that take scientific, societal and ethical considerations into account. You will also deepen your understanding of different forms of academic writing in archaeology and of how theory, method and research context together shape scholarly argumentation.
Prerequisites and selection
Entry requirements
Admission to the course requires a Bachelor's degree (180 credits), or equivalent, with one of the subjects Archaeology, Ancient Culture and Society as main subject (90hp), alternatively a Fil. Kand. degree (120p) with one of the subjects Archaeology or Ancient Culture and Society as the main subject (60 credits), (according to the syllabus valid until 2007-06-30).
Admission to the course is also granted with a Bachelor's degree in Cultural Heritage, including basic and advanced courses in the main field of Archaeology (60 credits).
Selection
Selection is based upon the number of credits from previous university studies, maximum 165 credits.
