Management & organisation
The Skagerak Facility is part of the University of Gothenburg’s marine research infrastructure and is operated by the Department of Marine Sciences. It brings together vessels, equipment, and expertise to enable advanced marine research and education.
The Skagerak Facility (SF) is a marine research infrastructure and Core Infrastructure at the University of Gothenburg, hosted by the Department of Marine Sciences within the Faculty of Science and Technology. The Facility includes R/V Skagerak and a pool of scientific equipment and technical resources supporting marine research, education and innovation.
Leadership and competence
The Facility is led by the SF Ship Manager, who also serves as Director of SWERVE (Swedish Research Vessel Infrastructure for Marine Research), a national research infrastructure hosted by the University of Gothenburg. The Ship Manager is supported by a multidisciplinary team with expertise in project coordination, communication, scientific and technical operations, data management, finance and work environment. R/V Skagerak is owned by the University of Gothenburg, while Northern Offshore Services (NOS) provides the vessel’s crew and is responsible for its maritime operation.
Organisation
A Steering and Advisory Committee (STAC) provides recommendations to the Facility management and host organisation on strategic, financial and operational matters and supports the long-term development of the infrastructure. The committee brings together expertise relevant to the Facility’s activities, including research, education, industry and infrastructure management. Day-to-day operations are managed within the Facility, while strategic and organisational matters are handled through the relevant structures at Department, Faculty and University levels.
Key roles and competencies
- Ship Manager / Manager – operational management, strategic development and coordination of the research infrastructure. The post is divided between Skagerak Facility (70%) and SWERVE (30%).
- Project Officer – project coordination, planning and administration. The post is 100% within Skagerak Facility.
- Communications Officer – communications, visibility and engagement with different target groups. The post is 100% within Skagerak Facility.
- Sea-going Technician – scientific equipment, sampling, technical support and work on board. The post is 100% within Skagerak Facility.
- Sea-going Technician / Data Officer – technical operations, data management and research data support. The post is full-time and shared between Skagerak Facility and SWERVE.
- Financial Controller – financial monitoring, budgeting and reporting. The post comprises 25% within Skagerak Facility and 15% within SWERVE.
- SWERVE Project Manager – coordination and management of SWERVE activities. The post is 100% within SWERVE.
- Health and Safety Representative – work relating to health, safety and the working environment. The role comprises 10% within Skagerak Facility.
