New HDK-Valand Course Explores How Artistic Practice Can Generate Knowledge

Published

How can artistic practice become a way of generating new knowledge? This autumn, HDK-Valand is launching a new freestanding course, Introduction to Artistic Research.

The course is aimed at artists, cultural practitioners and anyone interested in gaining a foundational understanding of artistic research and how it is practised today.

Participants will engage with current examples of artistic research from Sweden and around the world, explore a range of research methods, and develop tools for analysing and articulating artistic research projects. The course also provides an opportunity to begin developing an individual research idea and to reflect on its methodological and societal contexts.

– Questions about artistic research and what it can be often spark debate, both within and beyond the university. This course will not set out to define artistic research. Instead, we will discuss and reflect together on the possibilities that artistic methods and practices can open up, says Nina Mangalanayagam, course coordinator at HDK-Valand..

The course is suitable both for those who want to gain an overview of the field and for those considering developing research projects of their own. It also provides a foundation for the follow-up course Writing a Research Plan in Artistic Research.

– The aim is for participants to develop a basic understanding of what artistic research can be and to draw on that understanding when formulating a research proposal. But I also hope the course will inspire curiosity about and interest in the field of artistic research among those who do not intend to pursue their own research.
