About Karin Peterson

I am a Senior Lecturer at HDK-Valand, Campus Steneby. As the rural campus of the artistic faculty, we are located in Dalsland, midway between Oslo and Gothenburg. As an educator, I currently work on the BFA programme Crafting Futures, which I developed together with Tom Cubbin and the wider collegium at Campus Steneby. As a programme, Crafting Futures engages innovative pedagogies of craft linking materials, place, ecology and technology with a focus on rural localities. 

With a background in textile and fashion, my research work mostly concerns textile materialities, or textile-form and the ways in which they operate within socio-economic systems. Proposing alternatives to cut and assemble, I consider other imaginaries as tools to transcend disciplinary boundaries through an overarching act of craftsmanship, overseeing their speculation and informing of alternative form-defining systems as something concrete; as other realities.


My work is often collaborative and interdisciplinary,  with textile materialities as one of the desired results.

Currently, I am engaged in a three-year research project funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet). The research is practice-based and articulates critical questions concerning digital and computational processes and their consequent shaping of cultures and norms within the field of textile-form. In parallel, I am working with Nasjonalmuseet Oslo, examining contemporary approaches to making in the round through the historical lens of nålebindning.
