Master's Program in European Studies
Summary
This program deals with key European challenges and dilemmas from diverse disciplinary perspectives. You will increase your knowledge and sharpen your ability to analyze and evaluate the complexities of the economic, social and political developments in Europe. We have an active, international and welcoming study environment, combined with an emphasis on research informed teaching. You will be prepared for professional careers in the field of European affairs, or further research at the doctoral level.
About
This program provides knowledge about current salient policy issues and dominant theories within the European studies field. You will learn how to analyze the economic, political, cultural and social developments in Europe. We focus on interactions and tensions between different countries, actors, societal levels and groups. We study crises and change, as well as the driving forces and consequences of European integration and disintegration. The program provides you with in-depth theoretical knowledge, advanced methodological specialization, and practical skills through research-linked teaching where you deepen your analytical capacity both orally and in writing. Our graduates work, for example, as policy officers, analysts, case officers, consultants, and project managers.
Program structure and content
During the first semester, you will start with a course on cooperation and conflict in Europe, which introduces you to the core issues of the program. After that, you will take a course in research design and policy evaluation. The semester concludes with an elective methods course where you can choose between advanced quantitative and qualitative research methods. During the second semester, you choose whether you want to do an internship, study abroad, or take elective courses.
During the third semester, you will deepen your knowledge of European Studies. The first course focuses on challenges for Europe: integration and culture, followed by the course "Advanced Research Themes in European Studies," where you choose two elective specialization themes. The fourth semester is entirely dedicated to the Master's thesis. During this time, you will apply the knowledge and skills developed throughout the program to plan and conduct an independent study. Study abroad for a year and earn two degrees
This program offers the opportunity to earn two degrees by combining one year of study at the University of Gothenburg with either one year at the University of Konstanz in Germany, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, US, or one year at Fudan University in Shanghai, China.

Who should apply?
The program is a good fit for you if you would like to develop the knowledge and skills needed to critically analyze and understand European integration and disintegration.
You focus on one course at a time and complete assignments throughout each course. You will study in an international and diverse academic environment characterized by flat hierarchies, with students and teachers from many different countries and academic disciplines.
The program also offers a socially and intellectually vibrant student community, with plenty of opportunities to exchange ideas, make connections, and build your network.

Selection
The selection is based on the submitted Statement of intent and CV. Please use the assigned form. Statement of intent and CV shall be uploaded on www.universityadmissions.se no later than February 1 (if you apply in the first admission round) and May 2 (if you apply in the second admission round).
Priority will be given to applicants with 60 credits in European Studies.
After graduation
The program leads to a Degree of Master of Science (120 credits) with a major in European Studies. The degree provides a strong foundation for highly qualified professional roles focusing on European issues. It also qualifies you to apply for doctoral studies.

Internship
An internship prepares you for your future career. You gain perspectives, skills, and contacts that will be valuable when it's time to look for a job. On the Student Portal, you can find detailed information about internships and the rules that apply to internship placements at the Department of Political Science.
You are responsible for finding and applying for an internship yourself, but it must be approved by the Department of Political Science. One requirement is that the internship involves substantive tasks requiring independent analytical work, so you can put into practice the knowledge and skills you have gained during your studies. Common internship placements include embassies, government agencies, consultancy firms, and international organizations such as the EU and the UN.
