Short description

SIMAC evaluates integrated telemonitoring in the care of pregnant women with diabetes. Telemonitoring enables some aspects of monitoring during pregnancy to be carried out at home, with digital follow-up by healthcare professionals. The project investigates whether this model of care is medically safe, how women experience it and which factors are important for its implementation at a national level.

Background

Pregnant women with diabetes are at increased risk of complications and therefore require regular monitoring throughout pregnancy. Frequent hospital visits can, however, be time-consuming and affect everyday life, family life and work.

Integrated telemonitoring enables some aspects of monitoring to be carried out at home, with digital follow-up by healthcare professionals. This model of care has been introduced for pregnant women with diabetes at the specialist antenatal care unit at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

Aim

SIMAC evaluates integrated telemonitoring in the care of pregnant women with pre-existing diabetes or gestational diabetes requiring medication. The project investigates whether this model of care is medically safe, how women experience it and which factors are important for its successful implementation and use in clinical practice.

Methods and significance

The project compares clinical outcomes before and after the introduction of integrated telemonitoring. The experiences of women and healthcare professionals are also explored through interviews.

The findings can contribute knowledge about how digital approaches and self-monitoring can be used to develop safe, accessible and resource-efficient care for pregnant women with diabetes.
