About School of Public Health and Community Medicine

Here you can read about our research, education and vision.

At the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, 180 people work as researchers, teachers and doctoral students. You will find us at the Centre for Health Sciences at Guldhedsgatan 5A, by Wavrinskys plats.

Our research

At the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, we combine research based on statistical analysis of extensive population data, research based on qualitative methods, and laboratory research. We have several interdisciplinary research groups involving researchers from various disciplines.

Our research covers the entire life course. The sound environment in preschools is one example of research focusing on the very youngest children. Research on mental ill-health related to the work environment is an example of research focusing on the adult population. We also study public health issues linked to areas such as alcohol consumption, migration and climate change. In addition, we have research groups with specialist methodological expertise in biostatistics and health economics.

We work closely across research and education, and many of our researchers are also involved in our educational activities: in our popular international master’s programmes, in our freestanding courses, and in professional programmes at Sahlgrenska Academy, such as the medical programme and the dietetics programme.

Our vision

Our vision is to contribute, through research, education and collaboration, to better health for all and to reducing health inequalities locally and globally. We strive to achieve this by encouraging a diversity of research areas, perspectives and methods, integrating practice-based and theoretical knowledge, and promoting broad, innovative collaborations in research and education.

Our activities are based on the UN Sustainable Development Goal on good health, which is a fundamental prerequisite for people’s ability to reach their full potential and contribute to the development of society. Human health is affected by economic, ecological and social factors, and encompasses all dimensions and people of all ages.

Education

At the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, research and education are closely integrated. Many of our researchers teach on our courses and master’s programmes, such as the master’s programmes in public health science, global health and applied biostatistics, as well as on other professional programmes within Sahlgrenska Academy.

We supervise and educate doctoral students in fields such as general practice, public health science and epidemiology, and offer third-cycle courses. We also provide contract education in areas including occupational and environmental medicine, social medicine and biostatistics.
