Professor Hjalmarssons forskningsintressen är inom empirisk finans och finansiell ekonometri. För närvarande studerar han bland annat långsiktiga aktieavkastningar. Innan Hjalmarsson började vid Göteborgs Universitet, var han Professor i Finansiell Ekonomi vid Queen Mary University of London. Han har tidigare också arbetet vid Federal Reserve Board i Washington, DC, och för en Londonbaserad hedgefond. Hjalmarssons forskning har publicerats i ledande internationella tidskrifter, såsom Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, och Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. Han tog sin doktorsexamen vid Yale University.
