Local and global social movements
Summary
This course will introduce you to recent contributions to social movement theory, enabling you to appreciate their relevance for making sense of social movements both globally and locally in Scandinavia.
About
This course focusses on social movements in terms of processes of identity formation and the creation of new local or global solidarities. We will also discuss the nature of protest and the different strategies adopted by social movement actors when presenting their causes in public.
The course consists of two modules: the first will provide you with an overview over major theoretical perspectives and a variety of social movements, and the second will give you the opportunity to conduct an in-depth study of a particular social movement of your own choice.

This course is relevant to anyone interested in understanding social movements and their role in social change.
Prerequisites and selection
Entry requirements
Students should have at least 30 credits in Social Sciences or equivalent. Applicants must prove their knowledge of English: English 6/English B/English level 2 from Swedish Upper Secondary School or the equivalent level of an internationally recognized test, for example TOEFL, IELTS.
Selection
Selection is based upon the number of credits from previous university studies, maximum 165 credits.
After graduation
The course can be used to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. As well as a sociologist, you can also describe yourself as a social scientist or behavioural scientist. After graduation, you can work on social issues within government agencies, non-profit organisations, companies or local authorities. Examples of job titles include analyst, case officer, coordinator and project manager.
After completing your Bachelor’s degree, you can also continue your studies and eventually become a teacher or researcher. You can build on your studies with a Master’s degree in sociology, work studies, criminology, HR or another social science subject. It is also possible to progress towards a secondary school teaching qualification (KPU).
Facilities
Teaching takes place in the premises of the Faculty of Social Sciences in the Haga district in central Gothenburg. Lectures and seminars within "Campus Haga" are held in the buildings Dragonen and Sappören (Sprängkullsgatan) as well as Husaren (Husargatan).

Exchange opportunities
Students who are studying free standing courses/building their own degree have great opportunities for exchange studies. The only requirement is that the exchange courses can be included in your future degree at the University of Gothenburg.
