Doctoral Studies

At the Artistic Faculty, both the Academy of Music and Drama and HDK-Valand – Academy of Art and Design offer doctoral education in artistic research and educational research within the arts. Together, the two departments have seven doctoral research subjects and approximately 50 doctoral students.

Doctoral studies in artistic research

Since 2000, the Artistic Faculty has offered doctoral studies in artistic practices within an environment where research and education interact closely. Doctoral students meet in interdisciplinary forums and can pursue both interdisciplinary projects and in-depth artistic research. The programme can lead to either a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or a Doctor of Fine Arts degree.

Doctoral studies in education within the arts

The Artistic Faculty offers doctoral studies in music education and aesthetic forms of expression, with a specialisation in educational science. Research in this area addresses musical learning as well as didactic, political and structural issues related to the arts subjects in schools. The ERA platform brings together and strengthens research on education and pedagogy in the arts.
