Agrarian Institutions and the Rise of Industry

What role does land reform play in shaping early industrial development? Using digitized historical maps of over 57,000 enclosures, we examine how changes in land tenure institutions influenced economic activity in 19h century Sweden. Focusing on the iron industry — a key sector in Sweden’s early industrialization — we exploit geographic variation in reform rollout to analyze the link between agricultural institutions and industrial growth.
