The position is open to artists, designers and other creative practitioners who wish to pursue artistic research at doctoral level. Applications are welcomed from across the broad spectrum of artistic and creative practices, including multidisciplinary projects and proposals that explore or develop new forms of practice.
Research at HDK-Valand is organised in four overarching clusters: Materialities and Experimental Aesthetics; Environment: Ecological and Climate Challenges; Economies: Organizing, Valuating and Working; and Politics, Practices and Publics. Applicants are expected to propose a research project that demonstrates a strong connection to the academy’s existing research environment and areas of expertise.
Doctoral studies comprise four years of full-time study and lead to a doctoral degree. As a doctoral student, you will also be employed by the University of Gothenburg and become an active member of the academy’s research environment. The position may include departmental duties, such as teaching, corresponding to up to 20 per cent of full-time employment. The programme also includes a period of mobility and exchange with one or more of HDK-Valand’s academic or non-academic partners.
To be eligible, applicants must meet the general entry requirements for third-cycle education as well as the specific entry requirements for Artistic Practice. Selection is based on the applicant’s artistic achievements, experience and the quality, originality and feasibility of the proposed research project.
The deadline for applications is 5 August 2026 (midnight Swedish time) and the course starts on 18 January 2027.
