Study facilities at research stations Tjärnö and Kristineberg

The two marine research stations Tjärnö Marine Laboratory and Kristineberg Center are located at the Bohus Coast. They are two of Europe’s most modern marine stations, and offer education and research within the marine sciences. The stations have researchers stationed all year around, and also have several vessels and ships for education and research.

Tjärnö Marine Laboratory is located outside Strömstad by Sweden's most species-rich marine area in the northern part of Bohuslän province.

At Tjärnö Marine Laboratory we have university education and research, mostly within evolution, marine aquaculture, as well as nature conservation and marine management. We also give courses to many European countries, and the station welcomes international guest researchers.

At the station there are laboratories, field equipment, equipment for diving, R/V Nereus, M/S Doris, and remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROV).

During a course at Tjärnö Marine Laboratory or Kristineberg Center for Marine Research and Innovation, the students are normally lodged in two bed rooms, and eat breakfast, lunch and dinner in the mess. Special food for vegetarians and allergists must be reported before a course starts. Students at special projects and master’s courses can store and cook food in a residence building kitchen.

The classes include many field trips on larger ships, or small boats, or shallow sea floors in waders. Snorkelling is sometimes also included. Collected algae and animals are studied indoors at laboratories, where there are systems with running sea water.

Activities options

In the spare time, there are many options for activities nearby, such as nice beaches, bathing sites, and possibilities for climbing and walking. At both Tjärnö and Kristineberg, there are meeting rooms, saunas, and laundry possibilities. At Tjärnö there are a small gym.

From Kristineberg there are 1,5 kilometres to the nearest food store. From Tjärnö, there are 8 kilometres to nearest food store in the summer. In winter time, it is 13 kilometres. During summer holidays, there are smaller kiosk at 1 kilometre from Tjärnö.
