Meet the orchestra from the Master’s program in symphonic orchestra performance. The Swedish National Orchestra Academy will perform music by Grieg and Tchaikovsky under the baton of Cathrine Winnes, a well-established figure amongst Scandinavia’s leading orchestras and, for many years, principal conductor of the Stockholm Wind Symphony.

Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony is on the program when conductor Cathrine Winnes leads the young musicians of the Swedish National Orchestra Academy in the Concert Hall. In addition, a taste of Edvard Grieg’s fantastic suite about Peer Gynt. The concert opens with music by the peculiar avant-garde Viking Dahl, whose modernist ballet Maison de fous caused a minor scandal in Paris in the 1920s.
Cathrine Winnes
Cathrine Winnes is one of Norway’s most innovative conductors, working throughout the Nordic region. Her opera engagements include productions at the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen, and the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm. She has conducted several televised concerts with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. She has also conducted the Nordic Council Music Prize gala (broadcast via the EBU) and the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Highlights of the past season included Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Danish National Opera, as well as two German orchestral debuts with the Osnabrück Symphony Orchestra and the Magdeburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
Winnes is a dedicated communicator of music—on radio, television, and the concert stage. She served for seven years as artistic director of The Swedish Wind Ensemble, has been artistic director of Båstad Chamber Music Festival, and was part of the artistic leadership team for Risør Chamber Music Festival. She has been on the faculty of the Norwegian Academy of Music since 2008.
Swedish National Orchestra Academy
Hear the orchestra from the 2-year international master’s program in symphonic orchestral performance at the Academy of Music and Drama. The program is unique in its kind and is conducted in collaboration with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Gothenburg Opera. Each academic year, the Swedish National Orchestra Academy produces eight orchestral productions.
