Simon Nilsson´s PhD project will focus on the use of diatoms for new biomaterial, with special emphasis silica frustules and complex polysaccharides, substances that are unique for the diatoms, see below.
His main supervisor is Angela Wulff (BioEnv) with Mats Andersson (BioEnv) and  Markus Andersson-Trojer (RISE) as co-supervisor, and Kristina Snuttan Sundell (BioEnv) as examiner.

Short abstract
Diatoms are an abundant group of microalgae that could be one valuable source for new biomaterials that combine functionality, scalable production and low environmental impact. However, commercial production focus on fatty acids (PUFAs) and the photosynthetic pigment fucoxanthin. This seminar presents an effort to the diatom-unique fractions (silica frustules and complex polysaccharides) in life science applications
