The United States is currently undergoing profound political, social, and cultural upheaval. Polarization is intense, long-standing political divisions are being redrawn, and ideas about democracy, the role of government, and America’s place in the world are being challenged. But what exactly are we witnessing—a temporary crisis, a more fundamental transformation, or signs of a society in decline?
Given Sweden’s long-standing cultural and intellectual affinity with the United States, these developments have implications here as well. At the same time, the constant flow of news, social media, and competing narratives makes it increasingly difficult to discern what is actually happening.
This open discussion brings together several speakers to shed light on selected aspects of the current situation in the United States that may be less visible from a Swedish perspective. Rather than offering definitive answers, the event aims to provide context, identify underlying dynamics, and explore why developments in the United States should matter to us.
The event is designed as a dialogue. Following brief introductory remarks from the speakers, the audience will be invited to ask questions and join the discussion. Through this dialogue, the event also seeks to emphasize the possibility of taking action: how we can remain critically informed, resist resignation, and find meaningful ways to make our voices heard in a time of uncertainty.
