Three Sisters who are not Sisters

Text: Gertrud Stein

Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters is based on a text by American author and cultural figure Gertrude Stein, in which repetition, rhythm and shifting identities take centre stage. Instead of a traditional plot, the audience is invited into a soundscape where language becomes music and meaning is constantly shifting. Rorem's lyrical tone highlights Stein's linguistic playfulness and creates an intimate and humorous work about time, communication and how we perceive the world.

Fables

Text: Jean de la Fontaine, översättning Marianne Moore

Fables is an opera where animals embody human characteristics and dilemmas. Here we encounter birds, insects and other animals whose actions reflect questions of power, vanity, wisdom and responsibility. Each fable is given its own musical colour in Rorem's opera, where humour and reflection are balanced with subtle irony.
