Mattias Hallgren: Medieval tower campaniles with integrated scaffolding

How were medieval tower campaniles constructed? Mattias Hallgren made a detailed investigation of the medieval wooden tower campanile in the Swedish village Grevbäck in his project.

Measuring and model making

In Mattias Hallgren's project on medieval tower campaniles with integrated scaffolding, he investigated the wooden tower campanile at the Grevbäck church. The aim was to analyse the construction and the building method by measuring Grevbäck's tower campanile and building a 1:10 scale model of the tower. The work investigated issues of the original appearance, later additions, construction principles, bell fixing, framing, timber selection, junctions, and joining.

Scientific article

The work resulted in a scientific article, "The Craftsmanship in Construction and Transformation of Historic Tower Campaniles" by Mattias Hallgren and Gunnar Almevik. It was presented at the seminar "Building histories" at Cambridge in April 2017.
