Department of Economics recruits new Assistant Professors
The Department of Economics is seeking to recruit one or two Assistant Professors in Economics. The recruitment is part of the University of Gothenburg’s initiative to strengthen the research and academic environments of the future.
“This recruitment comes at exactly the right time for us. We have record numbers of students and need to strengthen our teaching capacity while continuing to develop our research,” says Ola Olsson, Head of the Department of Economics at the School of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg.
The recruitment is part of Gothenburg Global Scholars, a university-wide initiative through which the University of Gothenburg is recruiting up to 25 Assistant Professors across a wide range of academic fields. The Department of Economics has been allocated one of these positions and has the possibility to fund an additional position.
The position comprises 50 per cent research and 50 per cent teaching and is aimed at researchers who received their PhD no more than five years ago and whose expertise falls within one of the department’s research areas. Teaching is primarily at the undergraduate level in macroeconomics, financial economics, finance, and statistics, but also at the graduate level. Previous teaching experience is considered an advantage.
“We are in a period of significant development. We have an attractive Bachelors Programme in Business and Economics with record numbers of students, are developing new Master’s programmes, and will soon be moving into new premises. We also expect to recruit more new colleagues over the coming years,” says Ola Olsson.
International research environment
In recent years, the department has recruited many researchers internationally and offers an international research environment with active research groups, a vibrant seminar programme and many early-career researchers.
“We have a strong and international research environment, with several research groups at the international research frontier. There are many young and active researchers here, and excellent opportunities to quickly become part of the academic community. Gothenburg is also a great city in which to live and work,” says Ola Olsson.
At the same time, the department has a growing need for researchers who are able to teach in Swedish. For those who do not yet speak Swedish, the university offers opportunities to take Swedish language courses.
A step in an academic career path
The position of Assistant Professor is a career-development appointment and a step in an academic career path, allowing researchers to develop their independence and establish their own research profile. Assistant Professors have the right to be assessed for promotion to a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
“It has been almost 15 years since we last recruited an Assistant Professor through this type of career-development position, so this is particularly exciting for us,” says Ola Olsson.
Applications open on 1 September and close on 30 October. The planned start date is March 2027.
