Imagine Palestine - Negotiating Voice and Silence: Palestinian Representation in Israel’s Public Space
Welcome to a public seminar at Humanisten with the research network Imagine Palestine, which provides a forum for conversations on Palestinian poetry, literature, culture, and politics. The guest speaker is Rawia Hayik, senior lecturer and head of the English Department at Sakhnin Academic College for Teacher Education, Israel.
Dr. Rawia Hayik is a senior lecturer and serves as the head of the English Department at Sakhnin Academic College for Teacher Education, Israel. She finished her PhD in the Literacy, Culture, and Language Education Department at Indiana University in the United States. Recently, she was a visiting scholar in the Near Eastern Languages and Cultures department at UCLA, USA. Her academic work bridges theory and practice, examining how language education intersects with power, national narratives, and citizenship.
This talk examines how Palestinian presence, identity, and belonging are negotiated in the public space in Israel through language, visual symbols, graffiti, and cultural practices. Drawing on linguistic landscape research in Nazareth and other Palestinian and mixed spaces, it explores how processes of silencing and erasure are challenged through everyday acts of linguistic and semiotic citizenship that reinscribe Palestinian voice, memory, and agency.
