Our history
We are proud to be one of the most well-regarded institutions in the Nordic region within our field, offering both breadth and depth in research and education.
JMG consists of an established group of teachers and researchers with broad and diverse expertise. This is complemented by guest lecturers who are active professionals, contributing a wide range of perspectives and experiences. As a result, you may encounter everything from a TV journalist to an expert in source criticism or a PR consultant during your studies with us.
Currently, around 500 students are enrolled at the department, and approximately 60 staff members work here as teachers, researchers, and administrators.
JMG was founded in 1990 through the merger of the School of Journalism and the Division of Mass Communication at the Department of Political Science. However, both journalism education and media research have deeper roots than that. The University of Gothenburg has been a center for education and research in journalism and media since the 1960s.
