About Urology research

Within the Department of Urology at the University of Gothenburg, we actively work both nationally and internationally with education, research, and development regarding diseases of the urinary tract and male reproductive organs.

Urology is the second largest individual cancer specialty after oncology. It accounts for about a quarter of all cancer cases and represents one-third of all cancers affecting men, where prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer. Other common cancers within urology are kidney cancer and bladder cancer.

Andrology is an integrated part of urology where the urologist handles common gender-specific diseases and conditions in men such as erectile dysfunction and prostate diseases. Benign prostatic hyperplasia, kidney stones, and overactive bladder are common diseases in the population, unfortunately causing great suffering to those affected. These diseases, as well as functional disorders of the urinary tract, are also handled within urology and are in focus at our unit
