Matilda Bergqvist is a PhD Student in the history of ideas at the Department of Literature, History of Ideas, and Religion at Gothenburg University. Her thesis explores how marine animals are depicted by Nordic zoologists in the 1800- and early 1900s. The scientific interest in marine life increased significantly in Europe in the nineteenth century, not the least in the Nordic countries. Scientists joined marine expeditions or traveled to marine field stations to explore unknown marine life forms. Numerous animals were collected, classified and studied.
