About Christian Munthe

Christian Munthe is professor of practical philosophy since 2004, and conducts research and commissioned expert consultation on ethics, value and policy issues arising in the intersection of health, science & technology, the environment, society and the law. From 2016-18, he is elected member of the board of the University of Gothenburg.

He is a frequent source and particpant in media reporting and debates within his area of expertise, and also engages with the public through the blog Philosophical Comment and Twitter.

Research
Munthe has published 5 academic books and over 50 research articles or book chapters, and his latest books are The Price of Precaution and the Ethics of Risk, and (with Niklas Juth) The Ethics of Screening in Health Care and Medicine: Serving Society or Serving the Patient? In these, he develops a novel theory of the ethical basis of the societal management of environmental and technological risks and apply it to a number of practical areas, and presents a seminal and comprehensive analysis of health-oriented so-called screening programmes. In recent years, he has published a string of works on the ethics of person centered care and shared decision making, the ethics of forensic psychiatry and related legal systems, reproductive and family ethics, and public health ethics. In addition, he has edited special symposia of international journals on the ethics of new media and the philosophy of hate crime, and is currently co-editor of a three part book series on the latter topic that is forthcoming on Praeger Publishers. He is member of the editorial board of the internation research journal Bioethics, a founding member of the Centre for Ethics, Law and Mental Health (CELAM) and the Centre for Antibiotic Resistance Research (CARe) (where he is also member of the respective steering groups, as he is of the international Family Ethics Network), a member of the academic advisory board of the Centre for Business in Society (CBiS), and associate senior research in the Urban Safety and Societal Security Research Center (URBSEC), as in Gothenburg Responsibility Project (GRP).

He has been PI or co-PI of projects, funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR), Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ), Vardalstiftelsen, VINNOVA, The Swedish Government, and the European Commission. Currently, he is co-PI in the projects Practices Responsibility in Change (Dutch Research Council, NWO), Ethical Aspects of Person-centred Care (FORTE and VR), the Gothenburg Responsibility Project (VR and the University of Gothenburg), and the Centre for Antibiotic Resistance Research (UGOT Challenges).

Expert consultation
Munthe was a member of the Swedish government's National Council of Medical Ethics 2000-2006, and has performed many commissioned reports, expert consultations and other services for public agencies, the Swedish Parliament, and the national and county governments. He has been directly involved in the process of conceiving and designing specific law and other regulation or policy in several areas, such as reproductive and genetic medicine, biomedical research, public health policy and social care and welfare.

He is currently a member of the Delegation for Medical Ethics of the Swedish Society of Medicine, the Gene Technology Advisory Board, and the Working Group for Orderly Introduction of New Pharmaceuticals of the health Care Region of Västra Götaland.

Teching and supervisionMunthe's teaching in philosophy is focused on thesis supervision, examination and seminar moderation on the B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. levels. He is also engaged as lecturer for programmes in health, natural or the technological sciences, as well as courses for medical researchers, clinical specialists and health professionals. His supervision interests include normative ethics and political philosophy/theory (including jurisprudence), and their applications to human practices, especially science, technology, health and the environment.
