The Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts becomes the Artistic Faculty

Published

On July 1, The Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts will change its name and become The Artistic Faculty.

The history of the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts stretches back 175 years and the faculty itself was established, and named, in the year 2000. On July 1, the faculty will get a new English name.

In connection with the construction of the faculty's new building, Konstnärliga, which is currently underway, the faculty's name has been up for discussion, and in September 2022 the vice-chancellor decided, following a proposal from a name preparation group consisting of representatives from various parts of the faculty, that the Swedish name will remain the same (Konstnärliga fakulteten) but that the faculty's English name will change from the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts to the Artistic Faculty.

The name preparation group stated in its proposal that the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts is old-fashioned and has functioned poorly.
— The old name was long and a bit complicated. The Artistic Faculty is open and inclusive, and reflects our Swedish name. It is short, stands out a bit internationally and clearly signals that we are part of the university, says Henric Benesch, dean.
