Research focus area

Mikael Alsterholm's research focuses on different aspects of treatment and follow-up of atopic dermatitis (eczema).

Atopic dermatitis affects 20% of children and 10% of adults living in Sweden and the prevalence is similar in other parts of the world. Individuals with atopic dermatitis suffer greatly from itch, sleep disturbance, and skin lesions that affect social interaction and quality of life. In recent years new systemic pharmacotherapies for atopic dermatitis have been introduced. These new treatments can be very effective but real-world data is still limited. To improve health-related quality of life for the large group of patients with atopic dermatitis it is important to investigate the effect and safety of new and conventional therapies, predictors of efficacy, and patients´ perception and experience of these therapies.

Mikael Alsterholm's current work includes registry-based studies of the outcome of systemic treatment for atopic dermatitis, clinical interventional studies on the effect of phototherapy on vitamin D metabolism in atopic dermatitis, and a digital questionnaire study on patients’ experiences of side effects of treatment with topical corticosteroids. The work is done in collaboration with researchers at Karolinska Institutet, Linköping University, Umeå University and in the steering group for SwedAD.
