About Mattias Sandberg

My overall research and teaching interest revolve around human-environment relations, outdoor recreation, landscape planning, housing and segregation, time-geography and political ecology.

Currently I’m working on the research project “The Right to Buy in marginalised urban areas - how is local participation in urban planning and housing decision-making affected?” together with Robin Biddulph, University of Gothenburg (project leader).

Ongoing research project: "Multifunctional blue-green infrastructure - optimizing socio-cultural and environmental aspects for sustainable urban development" Project leader Professor Sofia Thorsson, University of Gothenburg.

In a previous research project I studied farmer’s management of woody-pastures in an UNESCO Biosphere reserve (East Vättern Scarp Landscape) in Sweden. The background to the study is a controversial tree-density limit that was imposed by the EU in order to differentiate between the official categories of agriculture (policy that falls under the competence of EU-CAP) and forest (policy that falls under the competence of the member states). This case of “simplifying nature” is used as an entry point for talking with farmer’s about their relationship with trees and how the management of woody pastures, one of the most species-rich habitats found in Europe, is influenced by changing policy directives.

I finished my PhD in 2012 and my dissertation (published in Swedish) deals children’s contact with nature/green space near to their homes in an urban context.
