Om utbildningen
In recent years, issues concerning the use of history have had a growing impact on teaching as well as research and public debate. The objective of this class is to develop a use of history that transcends traditional research and dissemination competencies and instead focuses on “applied history.” We explore the historian’s opportunities to function as a “social therapist.” In the course of the class, the student is introduced to different theoretical perspectives on how to deal with the past, for instance by means of identity processing, mourning, and conflict management.
We approach the challenges of conflict resolution and management through a set of concrete examples. The class places special emphasis on providing students the opportunity to reflect on and apply history themselves in various cases of past controversies or traumas. We primarily engage with European conflicts over interpretation against the backdrop of ethnic, national, or social tensions.
