Om Troels Degn Johansson

Dr. Troels Degn Johansson is Head of Department (:Prefekt) at the Valand Academy, the school for film making, photography, literary composition, and fine art at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at University of Gothenburg. With reference to the Dean it is his responsibility to organize a fruitful merger between the Valand Academy and the HDK/the Academy of Design and Crafts (effective from January 1st, 2020) and to lead the new department in accordance with the university's Konst 2025 vision.

Dr. Johansson has been an Associate Professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design, and Conservation (KADK) since 2011 (since 2005 at the Danish Design School). During this period he has led and implemented a number of reforms of the school's design and crafts programmes. As a Head of Research (2009-13) he implemented the school's research strategy and organised a (positive) research evaluation in 2010 which lead to the accreditation of the school's programmes. During 2013-17 he served as a Head of Institute for Product Design (new research-based programmes in Fashion Design, Industrial Design, Codesign, Ceramic Design, and Crafts/Glass & Ceramics). During 2017-18 he was head of KADK Bornholm with its glass and ceramic crafts course and organised its transformation into Denmark's first artistic professional Bachelor's programme (with an intake from 2019).

Dr. Johansson was an Assistant Professor and Head of Studies at the IT University of Copenhagen during the instutution's establishment. Here he directed the post-graduate program in Design, Communication, and Media and took part in the establishment of the Copenhagen Centre for Computer Games Research.

He earned the Ph.D. degree on digital visualisation in planning studies and landscape architecture at the University of Copenhagen/Danish Forest and Landscape Research Institute and did MA degrees (cand.mag) in Film Studies at the University of Copenhagen (1994) and in critical theory/Psychoanalytic Studies in the Humanities at the University of Kent at Canterbury (1993).

During 1999-2000 he served as a President of the Nordic Summer University.

Dr. Johansson's main field of research is the use of pictorial material in design processes and the relationship between fine art, crafts, and design with a special focus on historical and contemporary avant-garde strategies. He has collaborated with Danish art collective Superflex on/off since 1999. Dr. Johansson has taught and written extensively on aesthetic theory and pictorial representation as well as digital art, cinema, photography, crafts, design, and design education. He has supervised several PhD students in areas such as illustration and poetics, computer games design and player personas, critial/speculative design, experience design and tourism, design thinking/strategic design, exhibition design, sexuality and design, and performative aesthetics and urban space.
