Sergio García, avdelningen för software engineering, försvarar sin licentiatuppsats "Effective Engineering of Multi-Robot Software Applications".

It is foreseen that robots will become part of our everyday lives in the near future. In particular, service robots support humans by performing useful, repetitive or dangerous tasks. However, the development of such robotic systems is an intricate task because they require high levels of robustness and autonomy to operate and interact with highly heterogeneous, unconstrained, and partially known environments, often populated by humans. Because service robots must operate in such environments, service robotics is considered a domain with critical safety implications. Having well-engineered processes ensures the correct development of robotic applications, focusing on promoting robustness, autonomy, and safety.

The overall objective of this thesis is to establish effective methods and tools for engineering robotic software systems. To understand how the software of robots is engineered in practice, we first empirically determine the state-of-the-art on how software for robots is engineered. Based on our empirical results we establish methods and tools to support service robotics software developers and users.

To achieve our objective, we combine studies that aim to learn about robotics software engineering and studies that aim to solve identified practical problems for which we engineered solutions. To achieve this, we conduct our research in close collaboration with industry.

This thesis provides four main results that build upon each other. First, we provide an assessment of robotics software engineering, where we identify applied practices, their characteristics, as well as recurrent challenges and solutions. Second, we propose a software architecture and platform for robots that support human-robot collaboration and coordination of multi-robot systems. Third, we introduce a software language that enables users to specify missions for teams of autonomous robots in a user-friendly but rigorous manner. Fourth, we present a tool that computes the tasks to be performed by robotic applications based on partial knowledge about the environment and the robots' status.
