Lunch seminar: Organizing and regulating the intelligent workplace

Applications driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI) are expected to contribute to disruptive changes in the workplace. Their successful integration in large organizations will require changed organizational routines, staff-training, new regulation, and trust in technologies that make autonomous decisions.

In this proposed project, we conduct two in-depth empirical studies of: (i) a large Swedish production company and (ii) a hospital ward within a Swedish county council. The project examines how these organizations perceive opportunities and challenges associated with AI, how they integrate and plan for future integration of AI-technology, and how they view associated changes in work organization, professional roles, safety, and legal and industry-related regulation concerning AI-driven devices. The data collected for the study consists of interviews with individuals in different professional roles within the organizations ¿ from the management level to workers on the floor ¿ supplemented with participant observations, and studies of legislation and policy document. The case studies are analyzed and compared to identify challenges associated with integrating AI in organizations with an aim to contribute to new empirical knowledge, to a deeper theoretical understanding of the role of intelligent technology, and cater to the need of new regulation of legal responsibility of AI-driven technologies in complex organizations.
