Lunchseminarium: A Structured Literature Review on Refugee Entrepreneurship

Seminarium

Examining literature on "Refugee Entrepreneurship" (RE) is important for understanding the field and clarifying future research avenues. However, until now the refugee entrepreneurship field lacks a systematic literature review. The aim of this study is to conduct a structured literature review (SLR) on refugee entrepreneurship to answer three main question: (1) What happened in the past of refugee entrepreneurship studies?, 2) What is the current state of development of the RE field?, and (3) What are the future directions for refugee entrepreneurship studies?.

Entrepreneurship literature regards certain refugee groups as disadvantaged in relation to their characteristics. At a first glance, the literature provides an incomplete picture of disadvantages and advantages of "being a refugee" in an entrepreneurial context. To fill this gap, the study also seeks answers to two additional questions: (4) Are refugee entrepreneurs perceived as a group of disadvantaged entrepreneurs in scholarly entrepreneurship literature and if so, what are the basis of these disadvantages? and (5) Are Refugee entrepreneurs perceived as a group of advantaged entrepreneurs in the literature and if so, what are the basis of these advantages? Our study contributes to the literature of refugee entrepreneurship in the following ways. Firstly, our study provides the first structured literature review on refugee entrepreneurship identifying themes, approaches, and methods employed. Secondly, our study renders emphasis on the role of contextual dimensions, information and communication technologies and disadvantages as a source of advantages as relevant issues for future studies.
