Martin Sjöstedt är professor vid statsvetenskapliga institutionen och the Center for Collective Action Research (CeCAR) vid Göteborgs universitet. Han är också affilierad till the Quality of Government institute (QoG-institutet). Sjöstedt disputerade 2008 på avhandlingen "Thirsting for Credible Commitments. How Secure Land Tenure Affects Access to Drinking Water in sub-Saharan Africa". Argumentet i avhandlingen är i korthet att rätten till mark är central för att lösa den globala vattenproblematiken. Men den viktigaste frågan är inte hur rättigheterna utformas utan snarare i vilken grad staten garanterar att medborgarnas rättigheter säkras.
Grundutbildningen läste Sjöstedt på Handelshögskolan och statsvetenskapliga institutionen vid Göteborgs universitet och erhöll 2003 en Ekonomie magisterexamen och Politices magisterexamen. Sjöstedt har även studerat en termin vid Vrije Universiteit i Amsterdam och under forskarutbildningen var han ett halvår vid Programme for Land and Agrarian Studies, University of the Western Cape, Kapstaden, Sydafrika. Förutom i nu pågående forskningsprojekt arbetade Sjöstedt efter disputationen även halvtid som utvärderare på Institutet för utvärdering av internationellt utvecklingssamarbete i två år och var även gästforskare på Environmental Evaluation Unit vid University of Cape Town.
Forskningsområde
Martin Sjöstedts forskningsintressen ligger främst inom fältet jämförande politik och jämförande politisk ekonomi med fokus på utvecklingsländer (främst i Afrika) och handlar kortfattat om politik och utveckling, institutionell teori och naturresursförvaltning.
Nuvarande forskning
Sjöstedt har tillsammans med olika kollegor under de senaste åren utvecklat och fått anslag från Vetenskapsrådet för ett flertal projekt. De två senaste projekten handlar om hur korruption påverkar förvaltningen av transnationella reservat i södra Afrika samt hur kimatförändringar påverkar politisk stabilitet och ekonomisk utveckling. Sjöstedt var också delaktig i att erhålla medel för att inrätta ett så kallat UGOT Challenge center - Center for Collective Action Research (CeCAR) på statsvetenskapliga institutionen där han nu är Principal Investigator. Detta center fokuserar på kollektivt handlande och dess roll i att lösa en rad olika samhälls- och miljöproblem.
Undervisning
Sjöstedt undervisar främst på statsvetenskapliga institutionen och inom ramen för masterprogrammet International Administration and Global Governance. Han är för närvarande kursansvarig för kursen "Environmental Politics and Institutions". Sjöstedt har handlett två doktorander fram till disputation.
