Om Juhana Toivanen
My research in R&R pertains to medieval Latin reception of Aristotle’s Parva naturalia. I focus especially on discussions concerning a philosophical challenge that Aristotle faces at the end of his De sensu et sensato: How is it possible to perceive several things simultaneously? I will edit a selection of questions pertaining to this issue from medieval commentaries from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and write an extensive doctrinal study on them as a contribution to a three-volume anthology that the project will produce. Being a part-time employee of the University of Gothenburg, the rest of my working hours for the project will be well spent in editorial work for the mentioned volumes.
My areas of specialty are medieval philosophical psychology and political philosophy. I defended my PhD on Peter Olivi’s theory of perception and the internal senses in 2009. Since then, I have been working as a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the University of Jyväskylä (Finland). I held Erik Allardt fellowship at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in 2013. From 2013¬ onwards I have been working on medieval political philosophy, which I currently study in the context of my Academy of Finland research fellow project Transforming the Political Animal (2018–22). I spent the years 2010–12 as a visiting fellow at EHESS (Paris), and the autumn 2014 at the University of Cambridge.
