Sammanfattning

This paper investigates how academic engagement can influence firm innovation trough industrial PhD students. The study is focusing on the field of engineering, and how the industrial PhD students experience their contribution to firm innovation during their education. Industrial PhD students are a particular interesting form of university-industry collaboration since they act as boundary spanners and have the potential of influencing innovation outcomes. Qualitative methods have been applied and the empirical data is based on seven semi-structured interviews with industrial PhD students. The results of the study show that industrial PhD students experience that they contribute far less to direct innovation outcomes than they do in terms of indirect innovation outcomes. Thus, industrial PhD students mainly contribute to developing firm capabilities for innovation rather than innovation per se. In addition, the outcomes are solely related to product innovation while initial theoretical expectations also included process innovation. The paper ends with suggesting areas of future research.
