Sammanfattning

Online grooming refers to the process that offenders use to get in contact with children for sexual purposes, with the ultimate aim to sexually abuse the child/children in the digital environment and/or also in the physical environment. For this reason a number of pieces of legislation governing grooming have been created on international and national levels. The present paper discusses a specific case that has received a lot of public attention and been regarded as a high-profile grooming case in Sweden (court decision 2016 and 2017). This particular case is of special interest for the purpose of this paper since it illustrates how the offender used different grooming strategies to get in contact with more than 100 victims. It discusses the new Swedish legislation regarding ‘grooming’ that will be implemented in January 2018, in relation to this specific grooming case in order to then engage in a critical discussion whether the legislation could be seen as a useful tool for law enforcement. Drawing on the concept of critical research, the paper builds on the ideas of technological affordance based on the assumption that the involved technology holds certain features that promote potential affordances which enables certain behaviors. The paper makes an important contribution to the understanding of digital technology as a means of behaving in unacceptable way. It makes theoretical and practical contributions to current debates surrounding use and governance of such technologies.
