The purpose of this article is to explore dance as practices of memory in Strindberg’s A Dream Play in order to get a more critically productive understanding of the drama. Employing Diana Taylor’s term “the repertoire” – referring to practices of memory – we juxtapose the dramatic text with an analysis of a 1980 TV-production of the drama. As a result we strongly suggest that paying attention to dance in A Dream Play can give considerably improved access to disappeared memories or lived parts of psychologically, socially and politically charged practices and contexts. Such lively dimensions are difficult to archive in traditional ways, but as we demonstrate they can become more accessible if the “repertoire” – for example in the form of dance practices – is chosen as perspective. What is presented in the article draws on and further expands our work within the project “Dream-Playing across Borders”, at the University of Gothenburg.
