Sammanfattning

Sustainable innovations that enable the transition towards a bio-based and circular economy have increasingly attracted attention from researchers and policy-makers. Due to the systemic nature of the challenge to develop and implement such innovations, collaboration plays a prominent role. The purpose of this paper is to identify the challenges faced by entrepreneurs and managers engaging in cross-industry collaborations and explore the creation of new business models that are aligned with the circular economy. The paper draws on case studies of cross-industry collaborations between entrepreneurial firms and incumbents to promote sustainable innovations in the small but growing Swedish circular economy. These ventures involve substantial risks in multiple dimensions that are handled in different ways by the actors. The study identifies a number of external and internal factors and argues that a certain level of maturity of these factors is required to facilitate circular cross-industry collaboration.
