King Midas had a wish that everything he touched should be turned to gold and firstly it became his happiness but soon it turned out to be a curse. He could neither eat nor drink anymore as everything he touched was turned to gold that could be measured and valued but nevertheless he lost the touch with what really makes life worth living. What is the treasure of teaching? What is the worth with being a teacher? Like King Midas treacherous longing the New Public Management change of education in our age of measurement and terror of performativity has turned teaching to merely focus on students’ performance as a way to create measurable results. I will argue for not letting the NPM story of evidenced based teaching reduce us teachers to bureaucrats, for the sake of being-for teaching. Instead, and as a counter-act, we can let our own everyday storytelling flourish in classrooms just for the sake of being-with. Every day we, and our young ones, are flooded with well-produced and flashy narratives to consume that tend to minimize the importance of our own personal stories. We live by stories and we have to choose what stories to live by. If we mean to be serious about letting our future pupils learn how to tell their own lives then we have to start with our student teachers.
