Sammanfattning

In this paper I want to address the ethnicity dimension in care and domestic work within a Scandinavian welfare regime context. In Sweden very little research about the ethnic dimension in care work in public and private sectors has been undertaken. The purpose of my paper is to highlight the recent development within care research where ethnicity has been treated. The main focus is on paid care work, which means that care provided by family and kin is left out. The purpose is also to discuss implications of organisational change of care for differentiations within the work. The following questions are addressed. How is gender and ethnicity in care work visible in public statistics? How is organisation of care of elderly and of children changing? How is work differentiated in relation to ethnicity and gender? Which are the implications of change in care work for the image of and conditions in child care and elderly care? To which extent is the situation that is developing in many Western countries relevant in Sweden as a representative of a Scandinavian Welfare state where care is primarily a public responsibility?
